Why Losing Weight Won't Make You Happy After 40 and What Actually Will | 72
Why doesn't losing weight make you happier after 40?
If you've hit your goal weight and still don't feel confident, you're not broken and you're not alone. This episode breaks down why weight loss alone rarely fixes body image, self-talk, or confidence, and what actually needs to change instead.
In this episode of Weight Loss in Midlife, we're covering the real reason so many women over 40 lose the weight and still avoid mirrors, still delete photos, and still say "I'll feel confident later." Spoiler: later doesn't come from a smaller size. It comes from something else entirely.
We cover:
✔ Why changing your body doesn't automatically change your mindset or self-talk
✔ The three pillars of lasting transformation: physical health, mental strength, and emotional health
✔ Why midlife hormones can intensify anxiety, irritability, and emotional eating
✔ How to tell the difference between eating because you're hungry and eating because you're overwhelmed, lonely, or stressed
✔ Why identity shifts (kids growing up, aging parents, career burnout) hit so hard in your 40s and 50s
✔ One simple mindset shift: instead of asking "what do I need to weigh"
If you're a busy professional woman over 40 who has lost weight before but never felt the confidence you expected, or if you're stuck waiting to feel worthy until you hit a number on the scale, this episode will help you understand what's actually missing and how to start building real, lasting confidence today.

Let me ask you something. Have you ever stood in front of your closet, changed outfits three or four times, looked in the mirror and thought, nothing looks good on me? I bet you did. Or maybe you looked at a picture someone took of you and your first thoughts weren't, what a funny memory. It was actually, ugh, delete it. Or maybe you told yourself, I'll buy new clothes after I lose the weight. I'll wear shorts next summer. I'll go to the beach when I feel more confident. Well, my friend, what if I told you confidence isn't waiting for you at your goal weight?
Because here's something I want you to think about. Would you ever look at your best friend and say, hide your arms. Don't wear that dress. You shouldn't be in that picture. Of course not. But many of us say those exact things to ourselves every single day, myself included. And today we're going to talk about why waiting to love your body after you lose weight keeps you stuck and how to start building confidence right now, even if you're still working toward your goals. So put those earbuds in, take a deep breath, and let's prioritize the best version of you.

I can't wait to help you take the first step toward lasting weight loss. I just got back from such an incredible trip to Maui and Kauai. And while there were so many amazing moments, the ones I'll never forget weren't sitting on the beach. They were the hikes. These weren't easy, leisury walks either. They were long, steep, rocky hikes that were challenging, made me out of breath. They were moments when my legs were burning, my heart was pounding, and I wondered how much farther we had to go. And at one point it was over two miles to the peak of the summit.
But then we'd reached the top, and every single time the view took my breath away. Waterfalls cascading down cliffs, the bluest oceans that I've ever seen in my entire life, lush green mountains that looked almost like they weren't even real. Standing there, I remember thinking, this is why I take care of my body. Not so I can fit into a certain size, not so that the scale says a certain number, but because I want to experience moments like this long after midlife. I realized something on this trip.
If I hadn't spent the last several years strength training, walking, fueling my body the right way, and taking care of myself, I probably wouldn't have been able to do those hikes. Or if I hadn't finished them, I wouldn't be miserable instead of actually enjoying the experience. The trip reminded me that health gives us so many opportunities that we don't get if we're not in good shape or take care of ourselves. It gives us freedom. It gives us memories. And that's something that I don't think that we talk about enough.
We focus too much on the weight loss fitting into the genes, what we look like in the pictures, and not realizing that the way we feel and take care of ourselves and our health are going to matter more when we want to do the things that we want to do. For so many years, I thought the goal was to simply just lose weight. I believe that if I changed my body, everything else in my life would magically change too. Maybe you've thought the same thing. When I lose 20 pounds, then I'm going to be so happy.
When I fit back into those genes, then that's when I'm going to feel confident. And when I finally reach my goal weight, life is going to be so much easier for me. But here's what I've actually learned over the years, both in my own journey and from coaching women who are over 40. Changing your body only changes your body. It does not automatically change your thoughts, your mindset, and the way you talk to yourself. It doesn't heal years of that negative self-talk. It doesn't teach you how to handle the stress that you face every day.
It doesn't help you to stop the emotional eating. It doesn't magically make you more patient with your kids or your spouse after that hard day. That's why my coaching has never been just about weight loss, because the scale is only one small part of a living, a healthy, fulfilling life. This is exactly why I coach the whole woman, not just calories, macros, or the workouts, because lasting change happens when these three areas work together. This is where most programs stop. Nutrition, protein, strength training, walking, sleep, recovery, hydration, those absolutely matter.
You can't feel your best if your body isn't being cared for. But your body isn't just a machine. It's connected to your thoughts. It's connected to the emotions that you have. It's connected to the stress that you face each and every day. Physical health is just one piece and it's not the whole puzzle. So for example, you know what to eat. You've downloaded the meal plans, you've tracked your macros before, ate your vegetables. Knowledge isn't your problem. So let's start with the physical side because this is where most people or most women think their journey begins.
Yes, eating nourishing foods, strength training, walking, getting enough sleep, and taking care of your body can absolutely help you lose the fat. And it will. But the benefits go so much deeper than the number on that scale. When you take care of your body, you're investing in your future, like going on those rigorous hikes and not having to sit that out, getting to the top of that summit and seeing the beautiful view from the top and not just from the ground. You're supporting your metabolism during a season when your hormones are changing and your body doesn't always respond the way that it used to, and you just don't feel like yourself.
You want a different way. You're building muscles and protecting your bones so you can stay active, you can be independent, and you can keep doing the things you love to do for many, many years to come. And you're supporting your brain health and reducing your risk of chronic diseases like those type 2 diabetes and heart disease. And maybe one of the biggest gifts, you simply just feel better. You have more energy to get through the day without feeling completely drained by three o'clock. You sleep better, you feel stronger, carrying the groceries, chasing your grandkids when you have them, hiking up that mountain, or saying yes to adventures instead of wondering if your body can handle them.
That's what I experienced on my trip to Hawaii. Those hikes reminded me that taking care of my body isn't about looking a certain way. It's about having the strength, having the endurance, and the confidence to fully experience life, to enjoy the trip, to make memories, to see everything that I could possibly see. Because that's what health really is all about. It's not just adding years to your life, it's adding life to your years. All right, let's talk about mental strength. This is where consistency is built.
This is your thoughts, your beliefs, your habits, your routines. Can you follow through on a Wednesday when work was chaotic? Can you make the next best choice instead of saying, I already messed up, so I'm just going to eat whatever I want and go through that spiral? This is learning to become the woman who keeps promises to herself, not because she's motivated, because she's committed to herself, because she's living up to a standard that she set for herself. This is also where we work on that all or nothing thinking, perfectionism, starting Monday, negative self-talk, your identity.
Instead of asking what diet should I follow, you should be asking, what kind of woman do I want to be? The second piece is your mental strength. And no, I'm not talking about just thinking positive. I'm talking about the kind of mindset that helps you keep showing up, even when life doesn't go according to plan. Your kid gets sick, your boss gives you a hard time about something, you're just overwhelmed with the number of things on your to-do list, and stress is just overwhelming. Because let's be honest, midlife can feel like you're being pulled in a hundred different directions.
Maybe you're raising teenagers or helping your kids launch into adulthood like myself. At the same time, you're checking in on aging parents, juggling your full-time career, managing your home, and trying to squeeze in a little time for yourself. I know it can be a lot. I am trying to pack up two kids to move into college, and one is moving to a totally different state about 15 hours away. So mental strength is so important. It's helped you helps you navigate through these seasons without feeling like you've completely lost yourself.
It's learning how to follow through on the promises you make to yourself, even when motivation isn't there. It's choosing the next best choice instead of giving up because your day didn't go perfectly. It's learning to quiet that inner critic that says, you already blew it. And replacing it with one choice doesn't define my day. It doesn't define who I am. It's building routines that support you instead of relying on the willpower alone, because willpower is always going to fade. Because here's the truth motivation, it comes and goes.
Life gets busy, plans change. But when you strengthen your mindset, you become more resilient. You stop looking for that perfect week. You start learning how to be consistent through the imperfect ones. And here's what's so amazing: when your mind gets stronger, taking care of your body, it actually becomes easier. Trust me. I used to sit on Instagram and just save every recipe, save every workout. And guess what? I knew what to eat. I knew how to lift. It was this piece that was missing. And now I do have the freedom and the habits and the mindset to get me through a mess up or not a perfect day or the stressful days or the busy weekends.
You start protecting your sleep because you know it matters. You move your body because it helps you feel good. Not because you're trying to earn your food. You feel yourself with nourishing meals, balanced meals, because you value your health and not because you're pushing yourself. That's the kind of mental strength I want for every woman I coach. And even if I don't coach you and you're just listening, this is what I want for you. I don't want you to feel like you need perfection. You don't need endless motivation, but I want you to have the confidence to trust yourself to adapt when life gets messy, it gets stressful, and it doesn't go the way that you planned, and keep moving forward, that one choice at a time.
All right, let's move on to emotional health. This is the part no one teaches, but it changes everything. This is where you're asking questions like, do you eat because you're hungry? Or is it because you're lonely, stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted, bored, celebrating, avoiding something. Food isn't usually the problem. Food becomes the coping strategy. When we learn healthier ways to process our emotions, everything changes. Now food becomes nourishment and not therapy. This is when we learn pause before eating, notice emotional triggers, respond instead of reacting and giving yourself grace.
This is where we learn to manage our stress and communicate what we need, especially to ourselves. If we need sleep, if we need something to manage our stress, what is it that we actually need? Not the food. That is what you're using to cope with because it's the easiest thing to go to. You need to see the root of why you are eating what you are eating and get to that root and fix that problem. And I truly believe that this is one that gets overlooked all the time. You look for the meal plans, you look for the workout, and it's not enough.
It's not going to keep you going. Because let's be honest, by the time we reach our 40s and 50s, life is so full. Our hormones are changing, which can leave us feeling much more emotional, more anxious, more depressed, more irritable than we've ever, ever experienced in our life. One minute, we're perfectly fine. And the next we're wondering, why am I crying over a commercial? I bet this sounds familiar because this has happened to me so much over the last year. But it's not just our hormones. Many of us are navigating some of the biggest life transitions that we've ever faced.
Sending your kids off to college is so, so hard. Allowing them to drive and go out on the weekends and trusting that they're making good decisions and you go into bed without them being home. So, so hard. Maybe your kids are growing up and don't need you the way they used to. Maybe you're helping care for aging parents while you're still still supporting your own family, checking in with doctor's appointments, taking them to doctor's appointments. Maybe you're feeling burned out at work and wondering, who am I now after spending years of taking care of everyone else?
That's a lot for anybody to carry. And when you we don't know how to process these emotions that are new that you're starting to feel, we naturally look for something to make us feel better, something that's a habit, something that we know that we've done over and over again in the past. And for many of us, that something is going to be food and not a healthy food either. It's the chips, it's the cookies, it's the ice cream, it's the chips. It's all the stuff that we know that we shouldn't be overeating.
Not because you're weak, and it's not because you lack willpower, but because food has become a way to soothe your stress, numb your overwhelm, celebrate, or simply just catch your breath after that long, stressful day. That's why emotional health is such a big part of my coaching. I want you to have more tools than just a pantry. I want you to be able to pause and ask yourself, what do I really need now and get to it? Journal and get to what the root causes. Maybe you need rest. Maybe you need to walk outside.
Maybe you need to call a friend. Maybe you need to ask for help instead of trying to do everything yourself. When you begin caring for your emotional health, something incredible is going to change. Something's going to happen. You don't feel as controlled by your cravings that you're having. You recover more quickly after stressful days instead of letting one hard moment turn into the entire weekend of overeating. Your sleep is better because your mind isn't constantly racing. Your body feels the difference because chronic stress isn't running the show.
And you start losing that belly fat on top of it. And here's what I want every woman listening to here: taking care of your emotional health, it isn't selfish. It's one of the healthy, healthiest things that you can actually do for yourself and for the people around you that you love so much. Because when you feel emotionally stronger and have more control over your emotions and you're eating, you have more patience, more peace, more energy, and your capacity to show up is going to just grow. Not just for everyone else, but also for yourself.
That's the kind of transformation that lasts. That's the kind of transformation that I want to see for each and every one of you. That is my passion. Not because life gets easier, because I know that it's not going to get easier. It may even get harder, but because you become better equipped to handle whatever life brings your way. So one of my favorite ways to explain this is to imagine a three-legg stool, right? So you imagine that stool has three legs, you take one leg away, and the stool is going to fall.
So life is going to throw you curveballs, kids get sick, parents need help, work gets stressful, hormones fluctuate, vacations happen, the scale goes up. If your only tool is I need to eat perfectly, your struggle is going to feel hard. Your struggle every time life gets messy, but when you have a physical, mental, and emotional skills to go with what you're going through, you always have another lever to pull. Bad workout, focusing on nourishing your body. Stressful week, lean on your routines.
Emotionally drained, give yourself grace while sticking with one small habit. That's resilience. That is going to cause your transformation, that change that you are desperate for. Midlife isn't just about changing hormones. It's one of the most demanding and transformative seasons of your life. You're balancing a career while taking care of your own health. You're raising teenagers or launching young adults into the real world. Maybe you're helping aging parents still showing up for your spouse, your friends, your community, and everyone else who is always depending on you.
Somewhere along the way, it's easy to put yourself at the bottom of that list. And that's exactly why another restrictive diet isn't the answer here. You don't need another set of food rules. You need a stronger foundation, a body that's strong enough to keep up with the life that you want to live and enjoy. A mindset that helps you stay consistent. Even when life gets messy, it gets stressful, it gets unpredictable, and the emotional resilience to navigate the stress, to change, and the unexpected without turning to food or giving up on yourself.
Because here's the truth: life isn't going to slow down. There will still be busy seasons, vacations, celebrations, setbacks, stressful weeks, and days when nothing goes according to plan. The goal isn't to create a life where everything is perfect because it's never going to happen. And you have to let go of that expectation. Just like right now, I'm trying to do this podcast and my son is over on the other side lifting. So you're probably going to hear the weights go up and down and bang while I'm trying to get this done.
So the goal is to become the kind of woman who can thrive through all of it, a woman who trusts herself, a woman who adopts instead of quitting on herself, a woman who takes care of herself with the same love and compassion she gives to everyone else. Because when you strengthen your body, your mind, and your emotional well-being, you're not just setting yourself up to lose weight. You're setting yourself up to live a healthier, stronger, more fulfilling life for decades to come. And to me, that's the kind of transformation that truly is worth chasing.
All right, so today I want you to ask yourself one question. Instead of asking, what do I need to weigh? But ask yourself, who do I want to become? Do you want to become a woman who trusts herself, keeps promises to herself, feels strong, has energy, speaks kindly to herself, handles stress without turning to food? Because that's the transformation at last. That's what's going to give you lasting weight loss that's going to be sustainable and where you're going to be able to enjoy life, take the hikes, go on vacation, carry the groceries, run around with grandkids when that time comes.
And here's the beautiful part the weight loss often becomes a byproduct of the woman you're becoming. All right, ladies, before I let you go, I want to share something I've been working on that I'm so excited about. If you've been listening to this podcast for a while, you probably noticed something. We don't just talk about food here, because deep down, I don't believe your biggest struggle is knowing what to eat. You know what to eat. You probably already know that eating more protein is a good idea.
You know vegetables are important. You know moving your body matters. The hard part isn't knowing what to do, it's doing it consistently when life gets busy and stressful. It's navigating stressful days, emotional eating, weekends, vacations, family dinners, and changing hormones without feeling like you failed every time life gets in the way. That's exactly why I've been creating something brand new. It's called Stronger in Midlife, and it's an eight-week coaching experience designed to help busy women over 40 stop starting over and finally build healthy habits that actually fit real life.
This isn't another diet. It's not a diet plan. It's not about chasing perfection or cutting out the food you love. It's about becoming the kind of woman who knows how to take care of herself even on her busiest, most stressful weeks. We'll work on simple nutrition, balanced meals, mindset, stress, emotional eating, confidence, healthy routines, and creating an environment that makes healthy choices feel easier instead of harder. Because lasting fat loss isn't just about changing what's on your plate.
It's about changing the way you think, the habits you build, and the way you show up for yourself every single day. My goal is that by the end of those eight weeks, you'll feel stronger, more energized, more confident, and you'll finally trust yourself around food instead of feeling like you're always one bad weekend away from starting over. I'm opening the door soon, but right now I'm creating a priority wait list. The women on the wait list will be the first to hear all the details, get early access when enrollment opens, and receive special bonuses and that I'm going to be putting together for this program.
If this sounds like exactly what you've been looking for, head to jenniferpeak.com and join the wait list today. I'd absolutely love to help you become stronger in midlife, inside and out. If today's episode resonated with you, I would be so grateful if you took a moment to leave the show, a rating, and review. Those reviews help this podcast reach more women who are looking for support, encouragement, and a sustainable approach to feeling healthy and losing weight and strong in midlife. My passion is helping women feel their strongest, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, so they can fully enjoy this season of their life.
Thank you so much for being here and allowing me to be part of your health journey. I truly appreciate it. All right, ladies, remember that you are beautiful and strong. Until next time, keep showing up for yourself, keep celebrating those small wins. And remember, one choice, one change, one meal at a time. I hope you have an amazing week.
Before you go, I have one quick favor to ask. If this episode empowered you, it would mean so much to me if you could help spread the word. So more women can use that feeling and feel unbelievably strong and common.
